Who are the children?

Currently, there are about 200,000 children abandoned and/or orphaned children in institutions. These children range in age from infants on up to teenagers. Many of the children are healthy with a few having varying degrees of medical problems or developmental delays. Siblings may be available. The vast majority of these children are Caucasian.
The listing period for an abandoned child was changed from 6 months to 45 days, making it possible to adopt children as young as 3-6 months.

How does the process work?

Upon application to Children's Adoption Network, the family gives us a description of the type of child they are interested in adopting. This information is sent to our Romanian contact, who then searches for the best match for you. As much information as is available will be shared with you, including any photographs.

We sometimes may have waiting children. You may choose to accept one of these referrals. Once you have committed to a child, it will be completed approximately six weeks to three months later. You may, if you wish, visit the child before adopting.

How long is the wait?

It is difficult to predict an exact time frame. From the time your documents are completed and forwarded to Romania for translation, it takes approximately one to twelve months to get a referral. This can vary depending on the availability of the type of child you are requesting. Most families can expect this wait to be about two to four months.

Do I have to travel?

Yes. Two trips are involved in the process, but the first trip may be waived.  For the first trip, both of you (or one for single applicants) must travel. This trip can be whatever length you choose. The purpose is to meet with your child and feel comfortable with him/her. You must then go to the U.S. Consulate and show them that you have met the child.

The second trip is after the adoption decree has been issued. This trip can be by escort, if you have already travelled, or adoptive parents. This will be about one to two weeks.

What are families are saying about us?

Karen and George's story:
Sometimes, in the busy goings on at home, I forget about how the kids came into our lives. Then I sit and look through our albums and quickly regain the overwhelming joy and thankfulness for the miracles that our children truly are. I will always have an unbounding respect and devotion to Nina. She gave us the chance to be a family!
